Barnyard Sanctuary is a Texas non-profit, no-kill refuge for farm animals in the South Texas area. We are in the process of obtaining our Federal 501(c)(3) status. Started in 2004 with private funds in order to fill the desperate need for such a shelter, Welcome Home's mission is to offer care, rehabilitation and a permanent "forever home" for neglected, abandoned, and unwanted farm animals. Welcome Home also strives to furnish information to the public regarding farm animal issues and to promote compassion and humane treatment for all animals. The sanctuary embraces every opportunity to reach out to the public and to offer "city kids" a chance to enjoy one-on-one contact with our furry farm animal friends. We are also in the process of going "hi-tech" setting up an interactive and informational web site that is to include a separate informational children's section. We host educational outings by appointment.
As you can imagine, such an undertaking is one that requires a large commitment in time and in funds. Our current residents include 42 goats, 36 sheep, 6 horses, a donkey, 2 cows, 5 pigs, nearly 60 chickens, turkeys and ducks, and even a baby buffalo. We accept any and all farm animals in need and will take in and care for even the most desperate cases. As most of our animals come from neglect or abuse situations, the level of care required is typically highest when the animal first arrives. Special feedings, medications, and housing are all provided and round-the-clock volunteer attention is provided.
Barnyard Sanctuary is able to carry on its work thanks to donations from the public and its supporters and organizers. The sanctuary does not receive any county, state, or federal funding and there are no paid staff. All donations go directly to the care, feeding, and maintenance of the animals.
We are in the process of expanding our facilities and making improvements to the existing structures. As the caretakers of our little animal ambassadors, we feel that they deserve to live the rest of their days in a safe, comfortable and happy environment.
