Women Welfare Organization - WWO
Women Welfare Organization is a voluntary, non-profit, non-governmental Organization which is above caste, creed race or religion.We are concerned specially with women as they are from 52% of the population in the country and the plantation women who are voiceless due to backwardness.
Women Welfare Organization commenced as a work camp movement with people participation and the staff are supported by volunteers and guided by a team of experienced trustees and advisers who steer its work and development.
The plantation community had been brought as slaves from India to Sri Lanka to work in the tea estates of Sri Lanka nearly 200 years ago by the British. As per history these people had been brought by boats to the costal areas of Sri Lanka and have come to the middle part of the Island where the tea estates were located walking all the way. Many people have been died on the way during their walking journey to the hill country while few of them survived. (As per law of the jungle - survival of the fittest).
The elementary facilities including water provided by the government or concerned parties are not so healthy. This entails unexpected social as well as health hazards. This continued even after Sri Lanka gained independence. WWO wants to be the voice of the tea plantation community.
